Our first discussion will involve feminism and the complicated intersections of oppression within our society. These intersections include aspects of our social identity that often marginalise us, such as our class, race, sexuality, gender and (dis)ability.

The term “intersectionality” was coined in 1989 by Kimberlé Crenshaw who analysed and highlighted the difficulties of being both African-American and a woman in the U.S.A. It has become an incredibly useful word to help us understand the many complicated layers of institutional oppression and how they affect our lives daily.

This is why we have decided to discuss this topic first — it will help us to understand feminism through an intersectional lens in our further discussions 💪🏽👏🏻✊🏿

I will leave a link to the wonderful “Feminism is for Everybody” by bell hooks for anyone that is interested in some contextual reading beforehand. She managed to articulate intersectional feminism in an incredibly manageable manner. 🥳👍🏽

If you fancy reading a wee bit, the introduction is very helpful!
